The government in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, run by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, dropped the rhymes, immensely popular with millions of Indian children, from its syllabus taught to five-year-olds.
"We want our children to have value education in local colour," the Hindustan Times quoted Narottam Mishra, the state's school education minister as saying.
Children will now learn English-language rhymes written by Indian poets, papers said.
Scientists at Dexcel, the dairy industry's research, development and extension organisation in Hamilton, found cows which gain weight before conception are more likely to have a bull calf, while those which lose weight are likely to produce a heifer.
Senior scientist Dr John Roche, who conducted the research with Dr Donagh Berry, of Teagasc, in Ireland, on 1200 cows between 1986 and 2004, said the discovery bolstered the theory humans have some control over the sex of their children.
`However, there has been little consistent scientific evidence until now," Dr Roche said.
Even though the male determined the sex of the embryo at conception, the female had some control over whether she would keep a male or female embryo, he said.
"It's an evolutionary adaptation. In the wild, males compete with each other for a partner and the bigger male has a distinct advantage over smaller males. In comparison, female size is not as crucial. Therefore, any particular maternal characteristic that results in a larger offspring is likely to produce more males. The opposite is also true. A small male is unlikely to find a partner in the wild. Therefore if anything reduces the size of the offspring at birth, it is a disadvantage to the individual to be born male; therefore there is a greater probability of it being female."
Eating foods causing weight gain in the months before conception would probably increase the size of the baby and the likelihood of having a boy. Dieting and losing weight increased the probability of a girl
The St Thomas Aquinas High School students were taken to a Fort Lauderdale park on Monday to look for clues at a mock crime scene where the instructor had planted phony "evidence".
"The students went up to this one area ... and found a man with his back against the wall and he looked dead. They thought it was part of the skit," Fort Lauderdale Police detective Kathy Collins said.
There was no sign of foul play and the 45-year-old homeless man appeared to have died of natural causes, she said.
It may not have been a murder, but the discovery of the dead man may have persuaded one teenager that crime-scene investigation is not his life's work.
"I don't really think I could take finding any more dead bodies, especially if it was rotting," Juan Cantor, 15, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper.
Single mum says sorry before robbing
PENANG: A single mother of two apologised profusely before robbing a 41-year-old woman of two gold chains worth more than RM2,500, in Jalan Kulim, Bukit Mertajam.
State deputy CID chief Supt Razali Basri said the robber had approached the victim at about noon on Saturday and told her that she was forced to commit crime as her children had not eaten for days.
She and an accomplice, also a woman, met their victim while she was walking on the road.
The robber apologised for what she was about to do before her accomplice cupped the victim's mouth with her hand, Supt Razali said.
“She then grabbed two gold chains and apologised again before fleeing on foot. The victim screamed for help.
“Her screams were heard by a security guard who, with the help of several passers-by, detained the two women, aged 20 and 23.”
Supt Razali said the case has been classified as robbery under Section 392 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 14 years, with a possible fine or whipping upon conviction.

Peter Overschmidt, who operates a sailing school and rents the two-seat paddle boat on the Aasee pond, said the black swan with a bright red beak has not left the white swan boat's side since it flew in one day in early May.
"It seems like he's fallen in love," said Overschmidt. "He protects it, sits next to it all the time and chases away any sail boats that get anywhere nearby. He thinks the boat is a strong and attractive swan."
Overschmidt said the swan will figure it out sooner or later but hopes he won't be too heartbroken.
"I'll wish him all the best and hope that he doesn't make the same mistake again," said Overschmidt."
